Concerns in the Beauty Industry

To understand how the beauty industry has changed following the COVID pandemic, the Professional Beauty team has held focus groups with beauty brands. Some of the key insights we gained from the focus group were:

  • Salons are being challenged by the mushrooming of home salons run by therapists who have not undergone formal training.
  • Unqualified therapists undercutting the professional sector with very low treatment prices.
  • The use of cheap brands purchased by salons or therapists randomly on the internet. Such products usually do not come with a proven track record in the professional industry, nor do they offer practical brand product training.
  • The potential damage untrained therapists can cause on a client’s skin and possibly lead to infection.
  • How to educate the public about the above issues, given that cash-strapped beauty consumers are invariably seeking the lowest prices for both treatments and products.

The consensus of the focus group is that there is an urgent need for action to mitigate these challenges for the survival of qualified beauty professionals and salons.

It is with this need that we are organising a second focus group with beauty brands, salons, professionals and governing bodies; where we hope we can work together to ideate how we can mitigate these problems.

The focus group will take place over Zoom on Friday 18th November 2022 at 10:00 am.

If you would like to participate in this focus group please send your RSVP to info@probeauty.co.za to get the link to the Focus Group.

We strongly urge every stakeholder of the beauty industry to take part in this Focus Group. Please write down any concerns, ideas and suggestions prior to the session as we will have limited time for discussion.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Yours Sincerely,

Yolanda Knott

Managing Director of Professional Beauty

Amino acids are the key to maintaining skin health.

Amino acids stimulate fibroblast cells, it’s like giving nutrition for the fibroblast cells to produce collagen and elastin. Amino acids also have amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Amino acids help build dermal density, increase skin brightness, provide defenses from environmental hazards and improve skin hydration. They can be used on the face, neck, cleavage, décolleté and backs of the hands. Amino acids are classified as organic compounds and are safe for the skin because they’re natural. They don’t cause allergic reactions.
Among many topical cosmeceuticals, amino acids are a key active. They’re the building blocks of protein and an important component in what’s known as skin’s natural moisturizing factor.
In skincare products such as toners, serums, eye creams and moisturizers, amino acids play a vital role in maintaining skin’s ideal levels of hydration. They do this by acting as ‘conductors,’ working with proteins in skin known as aquaporins. Amino acids help aquaporins transport water throughout skin’s layers.
A secondary benefit is that amino acids can stimulate the production of glutathione.
Sun damage, blue light and air pollution steadily deplete skin’s supply of this antioxidant, but amino acids (and daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen, of course) can help revive it! Amino acids go beyond hydration to also strengthen skin’s environmental defenses.
